Senior Research Fellow
Karina Barquet is a Senior Research Fellow, Team Leader of the Water, Coasts and Ocean group at SEI Headquarters, and Lead for SEI’s Global Strategic Policy Engagement for the Ocean.
Karina’s research explores mechanisms for connecting landscape governance with infrastructure diversification as a way to increase resilience to extreme events and inform coastal and marine spatial planning. Key topics include integrated water and coastal governance, blue economy, nature-based solutions, disaster risk reduction, innovation for development, and the circular economy in the field of water and nutrient management.
She has coordinated projects like BONUS RETURN, HydroHazards, co-led sWASH & grow and the Gridless Initiative, and has been involved in several EU projects like BuildERS, COASTAL, EDUCEN and RISC-KIT. Karina’s work has primarily concentrated in Europe, Sweden and Latin America.
Previous to SEI, Karina worked with capacity building projects in Cuba and before that she completed her PhD in Human Geography from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology where she explored the role of transboundary conservation of shared waters and conflict. Karina has a master in International Development and Management from Lund, and a Bachelor in Peace and Conflict Studies.
