Dr. Karki has over 40 years of professional experiences in Natural Resources Management and Sustainable Development in the Hindu Kush Himalayan and South/Southeast Asian countries. He holds a Ph.D. and MS degrees in Forestry and Natural Resources Management from US universities. He is an Expert Member of Nepal’s Environment Protection Council (EPC). He is also the Deputy Chair of the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM). Some of the previous positions held by him are: Deputy Director General, ICIMOD (2005-12), Senior Program officer, IDRC, Canada (1995-2005) and Asst. and Acting Dean, Institute of Forestry, Nepal (1984-95).
He is leading or led different multilaterally and bilaterally funded projects and programs on Indigenous and Local Knowledge in Climate Change Adaptation, Eco-system Based Adaptation (EbA), Watershed Management, Adaptation at Scale and Environment Assessment. He has currently three affiliations with IPBES: a) Co-chair: Indigenous and Local Knowledge Task Force– b) Co-Chair - Asia-Pacific Assessment; and Policy support tools - Online reviewer. Madhav has led and participated in several global discourses on Climate Change, Environment, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development contributing his knowledge and insights in shaping policies and programs. He has more than 100 publications on biodiversity conservation, ecosystem management, agro-forestry, sustainable management of forest resources and climate change adaptation related topics. His major professional achievements are: a) External Reviewer of the SWISS-ASEAN Social Forestry and Climate Change Project in ASEAN countries, USAID/WWF/GEF funded projects on Sustainable Land Management and Hariyo Ban Projects, Nepal; b) Prepared Knowledge Management and Capacity Development Action Plan for Climate Change Management in Bangladesh; c) Co-authored and played a pivotal role in influencing the inclusion of Mountain chapter (Para 210-212) in Rio+20 outcome document – THE FUTURE WE WANT; d) Initiator and organizer of the first ever Mountain Day 1 and Mountain Day 2 on the sideline of UNFCCC COPs, 2011 & 2012; e) Founder and coordinator of the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Program in Asia (MAPPA); f) Key Player in establishing Himalayan University Consortium (HUC), REDD+ and High Value Products program in ICIMOD, Kathmandu (www.icimod.org); g) Founder and Executive Director of the newly established non-profit Centre for Green Economy Development, Nepal (CGED-Nepal).
My professional expertise range from leading, designing, developing, coordinating, supporting and facilitating community-based NRM, planning and conducting action research and knowledge management work in developing and mountain countries in Asia focused on natural resources management, climate change adaptation and mitigation and livelihood improvement. In recent years, I have been focusing on integrating forestry with a broader ecosystem and economic issues incorporating concepts of carbon forestry, organic production, sustainable development and environmental services. I am currently looking after the strategic positioning, knowledge plat forming and partnership development to link research to policy using knowledge management and strategic dialogue as tools. During the last few years I have been actively contributing in global Climate Change and Sustainable Development debate having led the Asia Pacific team that organized major events at the Rio+20 Conference held in June, 2012 in Brazil. I played a major role in drafting and getting approval of the Mountain Chapter in the Rio+20 outcome document – THE FUTURE WE WANT. I conceived and organized the Mountain and Climate Day (Mountain Day, in short) at the COP17 in Durban and COP18 at Doha. I was the chair of the global Mountain Partnership Consortium and been a pioneer in the field of NTFP and medicinal plants having worked in creating the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) and Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Programme in Asia (MAPPA) while working for IDRC, Canada. I have more than 95 professional publications.
