My primary research interest focuses on spatial development of urban systems. My approach is both towards urban phenomenon itself, how spatial processes give rise to urban morphologies – looking at their regularities; but at the same time, in a broader scale, towards the linkages between cities and their territories: how urban metabolism - as spatial phenomenon - is transforming ecological patterns, looking at the relationships between society and nature. Under this umbrella I am concerned with researching and promoting sustainable forms of urban development, understanding urbanization and encouraging innovation policy to tackle global environmental problems. Here the design of sustainable development policies at global level lies under the approach where urbanization – and cities - as spatial phenomenon shows certain common behaviour - at certain scale – despite cultural and social specificities. How spatial processes give rise to urban morphologies. And how urban ecosystems are interacting and redefining nature.
My methods are spatially explicit: Remote Sensing and GIS modelling as main tools.
I hold a PhD in sustainable urban development. My Phd thesis was a GIS modelling of anthropogenic changes in Chilean Patagonia and the linkages with urban metabolism.
