Project description

This project will evaluate climate change impacts, vulnerability and adaptation issues in the Quito, Ecuador, region to provide key information and guidelines to support adaptation planning and implementation. The goal is to increase the resilience of the Metropolitan District of Quito to the effects of climate change and enhance the sustainability of livelihoods and ecosystems, especially for the most vulnerable sectors, by gathering solid, verifiable information.Significant climate alterations are already evident, including a mean temperature increase over the last 100 years of about 1.2ÂșC and an 8% decline in cumulative annual precipitation during this last decade. Increased frequency and intensity of extreme events, receding ice caps, fragility of water supply systems, impacts affecting biodiversity, appearance of diseases and pests as well as dramatic changes in production and consumption patterns are creating a new reality for the Quito region. The Quito Climate Change Strategy (EQCC), approved in October 2009, is the first response by a local government in Ecuador to the above issues. SEI is supporting a key first step, gathering crucial information and guidance to help the Municipality understand vulnerability and achieve planned adaptation to climate change in the areas of intervention. The ultimate goal is to enhance the adaptive capacity of the District, its ecosystems and its economic and social systems.
