Dorian Fougeres
Dorian Fougères, PhD, has worked for over 20 years on coastal and marine, water, agriculture, forest, and climate change policy and management throughout California as well as overseas. Currently the Senior Lead for Nature at CDP's Europe Office, he serves as a subject matter expert for European companies and financial institutions on the organization's nature work including forests and water, and is helping to develop the strategy for increasing CDP Europe's coverage of biodiversity, plastics, and (soon) oceans. Prior to this, as the acting Deputy Director for the California Tahoe Conservancy (an executive position), Dorian oversaw the state agency's climate adaptation, community forestry, landscape forestry, watershed restoration, land management, recreation and access, and sustainable communities programs, as well as all organizational scaffolding (e.g., legal, fiscal, communications, human resources, and information technology). Beforehand he worked for many years as a senior mediator at the Center for Collaborative Policy, CSU Sacramento, including establishing and directing its southern California office. He completed his PhD in Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at the University of California at Berkeley (2005), specializing in the political ecology of coral reefs and conducting extensive field research in Indonesia as a Fulbright-IIE Scholar, Sumitro Fellow, and KITLV Leiden Fellow. At Cornell University he specialized in participatory action research and completed his BA in Anthropology summa cum laude (1998). Dorian is a member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Commission on Ecosystem Management, serves as the Lead for its Social-Ecological Resilience and Transformation thematic group, and authors the associated The Promise and Practice of Resilient Landscapes blog https://resilientlandscapes.blog. He also is a certified provider on the National Roster of Environmental Dispute Resolution and Consensus Building Professionals. When not helping communities and cities to steward their resources and adapt to climate change, Dorian enjoys practicing Mysore-style ashtanga yoga, getting into the water, getting his hands in permaculture dirt, and getting into the backcountry.
